December 2, 2009

December’s delicious debut dinner is done!

The outstanding menu was cumin red lentil soup, incredibly moist and tasty italiano chicken, green/yellow beans & carrots and salad, apples, bananas and clementines AND borrekas (yummy spinach in phyllo pastry).  They were a very special treat donated by Na’amat Hamilton!

One guest commented, “Whoever you got making the soup, they know what they’re doin’.” A couple of weeks ago, in Torah portion, Toldot, we read about Jacob’s stew of red lentils. “If Esau is willing to sell his birthright for a pot of red lentils, it must have been quite a tzimmes! … Lentils were the most important legume in the Middle East. Jacob’s stew was probably made of Egyption lentils, which are red.  Because lentils grow close to the ground, they are a symbol of modesty. As the proverb says: “as lowly as a lentil.”      The Five Books of Miriam, by Ellen Frankel, PH.D.
Fine, we may have chosen the lowly, modest lentil for soup this week; however, modesty in my e-mails regarding OOTC gets a failing grade!  Modesty is behaviour in which you avoid talking about your abilities, qualities or possessions. “Too much modesty is half-conceit.”  Okay… I am conceited too.

But last night was just too good to remain silent. Although there were about 90 guests, their appreciation was abundant.  A satisfied reclining guest who had just finished dining saw me smiling at his obvious contentment. He said, “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”  What an understatement!
Later someone told me that new McNab Church on Monday is serving outstanding meals like ham and roasted potatoes and their volunteers are as sweet as ours too!  Well, my first reaction was, “We’ll squash them! How dare they! Not a chance of taking our title!” But then, I thought, “Calm down, we can all be the best as long as we’re feeding the needy! Let modesty prevail.”

It goes without saying that we cannot do all that we do without the financial support of The Design Hope group. Their 9th Annual raffle, music and auction evening is this Friday, Dec. 4th at 7 pm at the Dundas Valley School of Art, 21 Ogilvie St., Dundas. www.designhope.ca Please join me, support and marvel at the commitment of this special group of people who raise funds and awareness for this important cause.

See you then!

Cindy
